Sustainable Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries
What the program is
The Sustainable Agriculture, Livestock & Fisheries Program supports smallholder farmers to improve food security, incomes, and resilience through climate-smart agriculture and integrated livestock systems.
The program focuses on organic crop production, local seed multiplication, sustainable gardening, and improved livestock management, enabling communities to increase productivity while protecting natural resources.
Farmers receive hands-on training, access to improved local seeds, livestock starter support, and continuous extension services through trained village paraprofessionals.
Why it matters
Most rural households in Nkasi District depend on rain-fed agriculture and traditional livestock practices, making them highly vulnerable to climate shocks, soil degradation, and seed shortages.
- Increases crop yields using organic and locally appropriate methods
- Strengthens local seed systems to reduce dependency on external suppliers
- Diversifies livelihoods through livestock (pigs, poultry, rabbits)
- Improves household nutrition and income stability
By combining crops, livestock, and skills development, the program helps families move from subsistence farming toward more resilient and sustainable livelihoods.
Who it serves
- Smallholder farmers (women and men)
- Women farmers and caregivers, with priority in poultry and small livestock support
- Youth and village paraprofessionals
- Farming households across 40 villages in Nkasi District, Rukwa Region
